Sir Ken Robinson (United Kingdom)Keynote
8:00 a.m.–10 a.m., Monday, September 26
CCEU: 1.0 PD
Sir Ken Robinson, an internationally recognized leader on creativity and innovation, will deliver Monday morning's (September 26) breakfast keynote address based on his bestselling book The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything. The element is the point at which natural talent meets personal passion. When people arrive at the element, they feel most themselves, most inspired, and can achieve at their highest level.
Sir Ken draws on the personal stories of high achievers in many fields, including Sir Paul McCartney, Arianna Huffington, Matt Groening (creator of The Simpsons), Meg Ryan, and renowned physicist Richard Feynman. Armed with ideas that unleash the potential of people and organizations, Sir Ken pushes people to rethink outdated models and assumptions about intelligence and ability.
With a wry sense of humor, Sir Ken explores the components of this new paradigm: The diversity of intelligence, the power of imagination and creativity, and the importance of commitment to our own capabilities. He looks at the conditions that enable us to find ourselves in the element and those that stifle that possibility. He shows that age and occupation are no barrier, and that once we have found our path we can help others to do so as well. The element shows the vital need to enhance creativity and innovation by thinking differently about human resources and imagination. It is also an essential strategy for transforming education, business, and communities to meet the challenges of living and succeeding in the twenty-first century.
Sir Ken works with governments, international agencies, global corporations, and some of the world's leading cultural organizations to jump-start innovation by unlocking the creative energy of people and organizations. He leads a national commission on creativity, education, and the economy for the U.K. government called All Our Futures: Creativity, Culture and Education, also known as The Robinson Report. He was one of four international advisors to the Singapore government for its strategy to become the creative hub of Southeast Asia. A former professor of education, Sir Ken knows first-hand how the education system and organizational culture can stifle creativity by not tapping into people's natural talents and passions. The resulting disengagement represents an enormous opportunity lost.
Sir Ken urges leaders, managers, and educators to upend the status quo and launch a creative revolution to reap the rewards. He is author of Out of Our Minds: Learning to be Creative and The Element: How Finding Your Passion Changes Everything, a New York Times bestseller now translated into 18 languages. His now-famous talk to the 2006 TED conference is the most-watched video in TED history—more than 5 million downloads—and a brilliant example of his extraordinary speaking style; a perfect balance of content, anecdotes and humor.
