The Art of Coaching

Art goes beyond technique. Art rises above brush strokes or notes or any other specific skills to create an overall memorable experience. The same can be said for the art of coaching. In fact, when done with excellence, the art of coaching embraces the gifts and talents of the coach and the client, and moves into another realm while honoring all the skills and guidelines of the profession. Some of these gifts and talents include: creativity, imagination, innovation, intelligence, and intuition. Another important aspect of the art of coaching is the willingness of the coach to combine a broad array of techniques to facilitate new awareness or insights. It is truly dancing in the moment.

The art of coaching focuses on the coach, the relationship of the coach and client, and the serendipitous occurrences that happen in the space between the coach and the client. It is in that space where new insights and significant growth can emerge.

Some questions that explore this phenomenon include:
  • Who are you when you are at your absolute best?
  • How does your authentic presence and being contribute to your coaching?
  • What aspects of yourself would you like to more fully develop so that you embrace the art of coaching?
  • What is happening in the coaching relationship that enables a client to reach new heights?
  • What is being created in the space between the coach and client that allows for new awareness and understanding?
  • How can other artistic domains inform you about the art of coaching?

If there is art in coaching, there must be an artist! But being an artist requires awareness, vulnerability, observational skills, self-acceptance, and courage. Sustaining all of these attributes requires disciplined self-reflection in a supportive, safe environment. The term, "Coaching Supervision," is understood in some countries as a means for both beginning and experienced coaches to create and sustain that environment in which the artist can flourish. In other countries, the term, "supervision," is off putting and implies evaluation and judgment from a superior. As used in this workshop, the term means "Coaching the Coach on their Coaching." We will attend specifically to the practice of coaching after coach training and certification. The artistry of coaching emerges in practice, and the artist is continually challenged just as Michelangelo was always challenged when working with marble.

This workshop will engage participants in discovering their own artist-as-coach through the use of poetry, photography, and hands-on activities. We will explore what supports and hinders the emergence of the artist. We will define coaching supervision in general and as it relates to the ethics and effectiveness of coaching, as well as the personal equilibrium of the coach. Come polish your own reflective mirror to see more clearly your art-in-action. Participants will take away a set of reflective practices to continue refining their art in order to generate that space where new insights and significant growth can emerge.

This session is a fun and highly interactive workshop designed to help coaches overcome their anxiety when pitching ideas to potential clients, running workshops, or making phone or in-person presentations. Just like Colin Firth in The King's Speech, coaches can learn creative speech and movement exercises to help them speak more slowly and more clearly, look more confident, and finally solve the problem of "What do I do with my hands?" when presenting. Both novice and experienced presenters will gain insight into their own physical patterns as they learn the "ins and outs" of diaphragmatic breathing to project their voices, acquire physical and mental grounding techniques used by a leading acting and Voice Coach for The Royal Shakespeare Theatre in London England, and mime their way  toward more meaningful hand gestures.

Mindfulness is mainstream, neuroscience is a hot topic, and presence is an ICF Core Competency. The rich territory of awareness and self-knowledge opened by these entry points continues to call us forward. This highly experiential session explores presence as a meta-competency. We claim that presence is fundamental to our capacity to serve our clients' emergence without being hijacked by our own identity needs and attachments. Beyond presence as a coaching competency, we also claim that presence is both an explicit outcome of coaching, and supports in a direct way every other behavioral change outcome. Presence, in fact, is the key to the resilience and generativity that we all seek, irrespective of the more performance-related outcomes that clients sometimes show up with.

As facilitators of human development, it behooves us to continually deepen our access to presence, and explore how presence can increasingly inform our work. Today, we explore practices for self-observation, sensation, and the heart as distinct doorways into the abiding state of presence. We experience presence, and practice extending heart-based presence into the conversational space.

Coaches all over the world are communicating "efficiently" using verbal skills, but may not necessarily be aware of the extent and significance of the nonverbal signals displayed by their clients. When we become so familiar with a task that it becomes second nature, we also become more efficient because we no longer need to devote as much of our conscious attention to the task. This leaves us free to put our attention on other things. However, the more efficient we are, the less we tend to pay attention to details that we deem unnecessary at the moment. Even a task as complex as verbal communication can lure us in with its efficiency, thanks to the uniform structure and familiarity of spoken language, giving us permission to ignore other signals, because we assume we "already got the message." In other words, we focus on the spoken word to the exclusion of many nonverbal cues.

The exercises in this session are about stripping away these familiar structures, allowing coaches of all experience levels to increase their ability to obtain more information from their surroundings than they ever thought possible! Most importantly, it will show coaches what it feels like to focus on the nonverbal cues without the risk of being too distracted by spoken language. By the time this session is over, participants will gain more advanced active listening skills, more effective (not just "efficient") communication skills, and increased confidence in the power of intuition.

We are in the midst of profound global energetic transformation. This is affecting leaders in their organizations, entrepreneurs in their businesses, everyone in their lifestyles, and, of course, impacting the coaches that serve them.

Coaching that gets results demands an alchemy of sorts. It requires the coach to show up whole: to be physically resilient, emotionally intelligent, mentally agile and spiritually conscious. Great coaches are resonant coaches. They get results. Resonant coaches are aware, and attuned to themselves, others, and the world around them. They radiate positive energy, igniting, and empowering positive attitudes in their clients.

In this dynamic and interactive session, come prepared to challenge your thinking-to move beyond your learning edge. Explore the habits of mind, body, and behavior that enable us to create resonance. Emerge from this session with a greater appreciation of your vitality and that of your clients. You will learn how to use subtle energies to build powerful connections and effectively drive transformation and change. Resonant coaching is about moving people, powerfully, passionately, and purposefully to fulfill their potential in one or more areas of their life. Leave inspired and ready to move into resonance in your coach/client relationships and beyond.

Empathic brain, empathic presence: From the lab to your session

Are we naturally empathic? Is there a way to source into our being to increase our empathic presence? How does our empathic nature work when we achieve our own intentions and express our own emotions and when we see others doing the same? This session will discuss in a highly interactive way how neuroscience research can inspire the furthering of the work of professional coaches with their clients, and will emphasize how empathy is key in establishing connections with ourselves and others.

We will explore the role of mirror neurons, and how they can help us understand our empathic nature. Research findings on mirror neurons suggest that humans are wired for empathy, a form of empathy strongly anchored to the body and its movements. Indeed, brain imaging data demonstrates that highly empathic individuals activate mirror neuron areas more than less empathic individuals. Join us in this exciting session where you can discover more about yourself, and be inspired for new coaching artistry, by exploring and learning the new knowledge that emerges from the lab.
