Continuing Coaching Education (CCE) Policy & Procedures
1. Position Statement
1.1. Mission - To BUILD, SUPPORT, and, PRESERVE the integrity of the coaching profession through programs, and standards advanced by the individual membership.
1.2. Purpose - To establish the minimum continuing coaching education criteria and standards for re-certification of ICF credentialed professionals. To insure participating coaches and providers of approved continuing coaching education programs meet or exceed these minimum standards.
2. Continuing Coaching Education
2.1. Definition - Continuing Coaching Education (CCE) are formal courses and seminars that teach skills or tools directly related to ICF Core Competencies, the personal development of the coach, the development of the coach's practice or other skills or tools that are directly applicable to coaching.
2.2. A Continuing Coaching Education Unit (CCEU) is defined to be an element of time with one (1) CCEU being the equivalent of sixty (60) minutes of direct educational contact. Non-educational time, such as lunch breaks, shall not count toward the awarding of CCEUs. CCEUs shall not be rounded up or down.
2.3. The following qualify as CCE:
2.3.1. Individual courses which the applicant member has not previously completed within an ICF Accredited Coach Training Program (ACTP). Please note: Coach training schools must apply for and be awarded CCEUs for courses not included in an ACTP.
2.3.2. One time courses or seminars that have successfully met the ICF Approved CCE standards.
2.3.3. Recurring courses or seminars that have successfully met the ICF Approved CCE standards. A course or seminar is considered to be a recurring course or seminar if i) the course or seminar is scheduled to occur in multiple locations within a standard calendar year; ii) the program description is identical across all locations; iii) the instructor(s) are equally qualified across all locations; and iv) the provider organization is the same across all locations.
2.3.4. ICF conference breakout sessions, pre-conference and post-conference workshops that have passed the ICF Conference Committee program selection process.
2.3.5. Non-ICF approved courses or seminars for which the individual applicant member can clearly prove: i) the member has successfully completed the course work; and ii) there exists a direct relationship between the course objectives and the ICF core competencies; or iii) the course material relates to the personal development of the coach and/or the development of the coach's practice; or iv) the course content is directly applicable to coaching. The burden of proof regarding applicability to coaching rests solely with the applicant member. 2.4. The following do not qualify as CCE:
2.4.1. Individual and group coaching.
2.4.2. Courses and seminars taught from a therapeutic perspective.
2.4.3. ICF Conference keynote presentations.
2.4.4. Undergraduate or post-graduate university classes unless they fall within the definition of Coach Specific Training. 2.5. CCEU Requirements for PCC & MCC Re-Certification - Renewal of PCC & MCC certification occurs every three (3) years. The CCE requirement for certification renewal is 40 CCEUs over the three (3) year period. A minimum of 24 of the required 40 CCEUs must directly relate to the ICF core competencies. The remaining 16 CCEUs of the required 40 CCEUs must relate to either the ICF core competencies or to i) the personal development of the coach, ii) the development of the coach's practice or iii) be skills or tools that are directly applicable to coaching.
3. Guidelines for CCEU Authorization & Credit -
The ICF Application Review Committee shall have the sole discretion to make all determinations regarding the awarding of ICF approved CCEUs. All Application Review Committee decisions are final. ICF approved CCEUs may be obtained in one of two ways:
3.1. Approved Provider. The provider of the course or seminar may elect to apply for ICF Approved Provider status and CCEUs prior to offering the course or seminar. PCCs & MCCs successfully completing Approved Provider courses or seminars will receive credit for the approved number of CCEUs.
3.1.1. To qualify as an ICF Approved Provider and receive ICF approved CCEUs, the applicant provider must:
3.1.1.1. Complete a separate Approved Provider Application for each course or seminar for which the applicant provider wishes to have CCEUs awarded.
3.1.1.2. Submit two (2) copies of the completed Approved Provider Application and a check for the appropriate nonrefundable application fee to the ICF Application Review Committee at least three (3) months prior to the first date the course or seminar is scheduled to occur.
3.1.1.3. Successfully demonstrate compliance with the ICF Continuing Coaching Education Policies and Procedures as interpreted and enforced by the ICF Application Review Committee.
3.1.2. During the review process, the Application Review Committee may determine that additional information is required to render a decision. In the event additional information is needed, the Application Review Committee will notify the applicant provider in writing. It is the applicant provider's sole responsibility to provide the Application Review Committee with needed information in a timely manner.
3.1.3. The Application Review Committee will render a final determination regarding Approved Provider status and approved CCEUs within eight (8) weeks of the Committee's receipt of all information requested and required. The applicant provider will be notified in writing of the Committee's decision.
3.1.4. If the Application Review Committee determines that the applicant provider meets the requirements for Approved Provider status, the Application Review Committee will award the applicant provider the status of Approved Provider and will assign a certain number of approved CCEUs to the course or seminar. The CCEUs will be separately classified and calculated based upon the total instruction minutes in each of the four following categories:
3.1.4.1. ICF Core Competencies.
3.1.4.2. Personal development of the coach.
3.1.4.3. Development of the coach's practice.
3.1.4.4. Other skills or tools that are directly applicable to coaching.
3.1.5. If the Application Review Committee determines that the applicant provider does not meet the requirements for Approved Provider status, the applicant provider may elect to submit a new application, pay the nonrefundable application fee and begin the process anew.
3.1.6. Approved Provider status is determined on a course by course or seminar by seminar basis and is based upon a standard calendar year. Recurring courses that are offered in different calendar years must apply for Approved Provider status each year in which the course is offered.
3.1.7. Previously being granted Approved Provider status does not guarantee that subsequent Approved Provider Applications will be granted Approved Provider status.
3.1.8. The Application Review Committee reserves the right to revoke Approved Provider status at its sole discretion and without prior warning in the event the Approved Provider:
3.1.8.1. Violates the ICF Code of Ethics.
3.1.8.2. Provides false or misleading information to the Application Review Committee.
3.1.8.3. Fails to deliver the educational program and instructor(s) as approved by the Application Review Committee.
3.2. CCEU Approval for non-Approved Provider Courses or Seminars. PCCs & MCCs who have successfully completed non-Approved Provider courses or seminars may elect to request ICF credit for these CCEUs when applying for re-certification.
3.2.1. To receive CCEU credit for non-Approved Provider courses or seminars, the PCC or MCC must:
3.2.1.1. Complete the PCC & MCC Re-certification Application's CCE section by listing each course or seminar for which the PCC or MCC wishes to receive CCEU credit.
3.2.1.2. Clearly demonstrate beyond a reasonable doubt that non-Approved Provider courses and seminars provided content in at least one of the following areas:
3.2.1.2.1. ICF Core Competencies
3.2.1.2.2. Personal development of the coach.
3.2.1.2.3. Development of the coach's practice.
3.2.1.2.4. Other skills or tools that are directly applicable to coaching.
3.2.2. During the PCC/MCC re-certification review process, the Application Review Committee may determine that additional information is required to render a decision as to whether the non-Approved Provider course or seminar qualifies for CCEU credit. In the event additional information is needed, the Application Review Committee will notify the PCC/MCC in writing. It is the PCC's or MCC's sole responsibility to provide the Application Review Committee with needed information in a timely manner.
3.2.3. The Application Review Committee will render a final determination regarding approved CCEUs for non-Approved Provider courses or seminars within eight (8) weeks of the Committee's receipt of all information requested and required. The PCC/MCC will be notified in writing of the Committee's decision.
3.2.4. If the Application Review Committee determines that the non-Approved course or seminar meets the requirements for CCEUs, the Application Review Committee will grant the PCC/MCC a certain number of approved CCEUs. The CCEUs will be separately classified and calculated based upon the total instruction minutes in each of the four following categories:
3.2.4.1. ICF Core Competencies.
3.2.4.2. Personal development of the coach.
3.2.4.3. Development of the coach's practice.
3.2.4.4. Other skills or tools that are directly applicable to coaching.
3.2.5. CCEUs for non-Approved Provider courses and seminars are determined on an individual PCC/MCC basis.
3.2.6. The Application Review Committee reserves the right to revoke Approved CCEUs at its sole discretion and without prior warning in the event the PCC/MCC provides false or misleading information to the Application Review Committee.
