About the ICF

The ICF exists to serve its members and the coaching community. Founded in 1992, and incorporated in 1996, ICF's mission is to build, support, and preserve the integrity of the coaching profession.

In support of this mission, ICF has undertaken several key initiatives to:

  • Foster the development of a worldwide community of coaches.
  • Establish minimum standards and healthy practices of coaching.
  • Support members in creating high quality lives and successful coaching practices.
  • Proactively monitor and influence key regulatory and legislative issues that impact the coaching profession.

ICF is also introducing a comprehensive ethical conduct and review policy and procedures.

The ICF is an international non-profit organization that is actively involved in researching and developing programs to serve coaches, clients, and the greater coaching community. To this end, the ICF has developed and implemented a comprehensive credentialing program to:

  • Strengthen the coaching profession and build a solid foundation of proactive self-regulation.
  • Establish industry regulations and minimum standards for coaches and coach training agencies.
  • Assure the public that participating coaches and coach training agencies meet or exceed, and operate in accordance with established industry standards.

Professional coaching and the ICF are experiencing exponential growth and national press exposure. The proliferation of those joining the ranks as coaches is both remarkable and a testament to the tremendous value and potential of professional coaching. In the past year, the ICF membership has increased to more than 7600 members with 132 chapters in 29 countries. To date, over 1200 coaches have received their Associate Certified Coach (ACC), Professional Certified Coach (PCC) or Master Certified Coach (MCC) designations from the ICF.

With the high level of media coverage, the public is being educated and is becoming more aware of the importance of scrutinizing a potential coach's qualifications. At the same time, we hear that the ICF PCC/MCC credentials are a key delineator when scrutinizing a potential coach's qualifications. In addition to the added professional credibility, coaches are finding that potential clients value the ICF credential. Credentialed coaches also are reaping the benefits of their ICF credential by adjusting their fees to be commensurate with their enhanced qualifications.

As a member of ICF you are encouraged to subscribe to the ICF Code of Ethics and Core Competencies of Professional Coaching and to reinforce integrity and professionalism in all of your coaching related activities.

The ICF looks forward to continued growth and opportunities to support you and all ICF members in creating high quality lives and successful coaching practices.
